Choosing Appliance Types and Features That Fit Your Home

By Mount Prospect Appliance Repair Team

Before comparing appliance brands, decide what must fit your room and daily routine. A refrigerator with useful shelves or a washer with accessible controls can be a better purchase than a more elaborate model whose features you rarely use.

Refrigerators

Measure the opening, delivery route and space for doors and drawers to open. Try the shelf arrangement with the things you store, such as tall bottles or wide serving dishes. Check where the ice maker and water filter sit, and whether the installation needs a water connection.

Use the exact model’s installation drawing for ventilation clearances. Cabinet depth, handle depth and the space needed to open a door are different measurements.

Washers and dryers

Think about reaching the bottom of a washer tub, moving wet laundry and opening doors in a narrow room. Compare drum capacity with the loads you actually wash, rather than buying the largest machine by default.

For a dryer, confirm the available fuel or electrical connection and whether the model requires an outdoor exhaust or uses a ventless design. For a stacked pair, verify that the manufacturer approves the combination and specifies a compatible stacking kit.

Dishwashers and cooking appliances

Bring the dimensions of your largest plates and cookware when viewing a dishwasher. Try the rack adjustments and check whether the cutlery arrangement leaves enough space for your usual load.

For an oven or range, compare usable rack space, control placement and the installation requirements. A replacement with the same advertised width may still need different clearances or connections.

Compare the ownership details

For appliances that carry one, use the EnergyGuide label to compare energy use with similar models. The annual cost is an estimate, and your energy price and use affect the actual bill.

Save the model number, installation instructions and written warranty before ordering. Ask the seller to put delivery, installation, required accessories and removal of the old appliance into the quote. That gives you a useful comparison between complete purchases.
